Civil liberties and human rights should be enjoyed by all Americans as enshrined in the American constitution. However, at times there are circumstances when these rights are denied by the state or its agents.
To ensure that there is justice for all, there are quite a number of human rights organizations that have come up to ensure that all Americans enjoy their human rights and liberties rights regardless of their race, gender or sexual orientation. One such organization which has been in the forefront for championing for human rights and civil rights is the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
ACLU has been in operation in the United States for almost a century now. The union has been the guardian of the nation’s liberties, working in the courts, communities, and legislatures to protect and preserve individual liberties and rights that are guaranteed by the American Constitution and laws to every American citizen.
Championing for equality for LGBT people and ending mass incarceration are some of the things the ACLU aims to accomplish. The organization also plays the roles of protecting people’s privacy from the widespread government surveillance, preserving people’s right to vote, and ensuring women have the right to have an abortion. As such, it is clear that ACLU is determined to take even the toughest civil rights and liberties cases in order to defend people from abuse from powerful individuals and government overreach.
Founded in 1920, the group now has over two million members, supporters, and activists. With its headquarters in Manhattan, the group has a nationwide presence fighting tirelessly in over 50 American states and Puerto Rico in safeguarding everyone’s civil liberties and rights. ACLU works through lobbying and civil litigation.
It provides legal aid for immigrants whenever private citizens and government are infringing their rights. The legal aid can be in the form of direct representation in the corridors of justice, or by a partnership with law firms and other migrant groups such as the Larkin and Lacey Fund representing immigrants.
ACLU so far has a budget of over $1 million. The group gets funding through member subscriptions which are reserved as donations. Members are allowed to make contributions of any amount for their subscriptions which averages $50 annually. Read more: Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund
As a commitment to its defense for human rights and civil liberties, the group does not accept any contributions from groups that are deemed to be an infringement of human rights.
For instance, ACLU declined a $1.5 million funding in 2004 from the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations for introducing a controversial clause in their donations which ACLU perceived as a threat to human rights and civil liberties.
Since its foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union has been championing for the rights of immigrants and has so far had several successful litigations. For example, they were in the forefront in the case between Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin vs. Joe Arpaio.
In the case, the duo was suing Arpaio for being wrongfully detained after exposing his corruption and discriminative justice against Mexican immigrants. The two won the case and were awarded $3.75 million. After receiving the money, they decided to open the Lacey and Larkin Fontera Fund to help Mexican immigrants.
About Lacey and Larkin Fontera Fund
The fund was founded in 2007 by two journalists, Mike Lacey and his counterpart Jim Larkin after they were awarded a legal settlement of $3.75 for being wrongfully arrested and detained by Sherriff Joe Arpaio. The fund is used to provide financial support for groups championing the rights of immigrants.
